The First Phase
The first phase, known as the anagen phase, lasts between 3 and 6 years, and is the growth phase. The root of the hair (bulb), ensures it is provided with the nutrients which are essential for its growth. The head of hair as a whole grows by several centimetres a month on average.
The Second Phase
Then, in the catagen phase, over 3 to 4 weeks, the follicle no longer produces a hair. This is a regressive phase during which activity is interrupted and the growth is halted.
The Third Phase
Next, during the telogen phase, which lasts 3 to 4 months, the hair withers and falls out. At the end of this cycle, a stimulus triggers the birth of a new hair.
On a healthy head of hair, around 85% of the hair is in its growth phase, 2% is in the resting phase and more than 10% in the falling phase. This life cycle should enable you to have hair throughout your life. But the life of an individual hair is very fragile and in the event of repeated stresses, it increasingly risks not being replaced.
For this reason it is essential to take regular care of your hair.
A complex and sensitive mechanism
The hair is a true machine which is made up of a
shaft, a free portion which emerges on the surface of the scalp, and
a root (bulb), which is fastened in a hair follicle.
It is made up of keratin, a protein rich in sulphurated amino acids,
minerals, trace elements (zinc and copper), lipids (ceramides) and
water.
On average its lifespan is 3 years, but this will depend on the
stresses it has to undergo.
